Hang onto your (red, white, and blue) hats balloon fans and HBO loyalists! April 22, 2012 marks the season premier of HBO’s new series, “VEEP”, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Ballroom Balloons was selected by HBO’s local production company to provide balloon decor for the show. The taping took place in a Baltimore, MD hotel in early December, 2011.

Due to complications facing television and movie crews who wish to have the iconic Washington, DC landscape in their films, Baltimore has become a favorite alternative. It just so happens that many Baltimore buildings favor Washington’s architectural style. The state of Maryland makes Baltimore all the more alluring by offering a basket of financial and logistical perks. So, is Baltimore the new Washington? Don’t forget to tune in to HBO on April 22 and make your own decision……..And, don’t forget to vote on November 6.

For the shoot, Ballroom Balloons constructed fourteen ten-foot tall, full garland, balloon columns. The columns featured three-foot jumbo foil star-shaped top balloons and patriotic ribbon frills. Hopefully, we will get a glimpse of our balloons on the opening episode. It seems likely that they were used for a presidential inauguration scene. Hello Balloon Fans,
Now that the second installment of the World Balloon Convention (WBC) is less than a year away, it feels like its just around the corner. As a founding member of the Mid-Atlantic Qualatex Balloon Network chapter in Maryland, I was thrilled to participate in the inaugural WBC in Dallas. In March, 2010, I left the convention with a new found excitement about our industry. In fact, I was certain that I would do the following: Re-join my QBN chapter, take the Certified Balloon Artist (CBA) exam, and teach a class at the next WBC. The fact that I have not achieved any of those goals has done nothing to diminish my love for balloon decorating. The year that has just concluded since the WBC has been Ballroom Balloons’ most successful to date-And, that is thanks to all the balloon lovers out there.

The www.BallroomBallons.com balloon crew created a large doorway balloon arch to welcome the neighborhood to visit the new store. We decorated the ceiling with giant Topiary Sculptures which are clusters of one dozen balloons that are deco-twisted into spheres. In almost every way you can imagine, inside and outside are like day and night. But, most of it comes down to the weather. First of all, regardless of temperature, wind conditions, humidity, and precipitation, there is the air itself. Outside air invariably has more particulate matter which adheres to latex balloons. Be it pollen or pollutants, a white patina forms on latex balloons, virtually eliminating their shiny quality. This is also part of the natural beginning of biodegradation of the rubber that latex balloons are made from (see: ballroomballoons.com/faq.html).

Okay, let’s talk about the weather. Heat makes latex balloons expand and pop unless the balloons are pre-stretched and down-sized. Wind can make arches look like rolling waves and boquets appear as random floating balloons. Lots of wind can blow just about any decoration totally away. Rain will saturate balloons and make them come down.
