A Fine Day at the Beach

Its been quite a week here in balloon land. The balloon crew got to work at 3:00am last Saturday to decorate the Campus of Howard University. This was the traditional “Welcome” to the incoming Freshmen and “Welcome Back” to the returning students who live in the dorms. This is the first year that every dorm received balloons. We also put up arches along Georgia avenue and in front of the dorms. We even made a “WELCOME BACK” arch in front of the Macklin Towers, two sky-scraper sized buildings. You can see this arch at www.ballroomballoons.com/gallery.html. Its in category number 19.

Monday, we were off to Montgomery College in Rockville for their first day of school. There we arrived at a slightly more reasonable 7:00am to decorate some of the campus buildings and the grounds with bouquets of balloons. Thank goodness we got off to an early start because a regular Client called for balloons for the same day which we quickly took care of; and, then we got a very big request: A production company in town from Arizona wanted us to travel almost all the way to Ocean City to set up a couple of balloon drops!

With the talented help from Ed and Steve of Nash Balloons, (www.nashballoons.com) we were able to inflate over 1000 balloons, put them in nets, and rig them to the 22-foot high ceiling. It was an awesome set with a pirate theme, full of ships and buried treasure, and even giant sails. The balloon drops were set up for the finale of the show. Everything went well; and, I didn’t even hit any traffic during my six hours on the road…..If only I could have spared a day or two and continued on just a few more miles to the beach!

Next week the kids are back in school. And www.BallroomBalloons.com will supply the fun. Did you know that we can give you a fast and easy price quote on line? Simply visit www.ballroomballoons.com/quotes.html; and, fill out the easy questionaire. Hey, its just like being in school-a test for you!

Enjoy!

School’s Back……Almost!

Here in lovely Montgomery County, Maryland public school starts on Monday, August 28. If I were still in school, I’m certain that I would be complaining about the unfairness of having to go back to school before Labor Day. Instead, I am grateful that the schools have already been calling to get their “Back to School” balloon decor booked for the first day of school. Please see www.BallroomBalloons.com/testimonials.html for a look at some of our valued Clients.

Yes, the balloon crew starts its work at 3:00am this year so we can create several arches and bouquets at area schools before the students arrive. Its an inspiring time, even for a balloonist. We hear the hope and expectation from the school staff and parents who call us this time of year. It almost seems that they feel the balloons offer a true sense of welcoming and perhaps even an omen of good luck for the coming school year. The beginning of the school year is a stressful time; but, it is also a time of anticipation and hope.

Even for those of us who are years out of school, the new school year feels more powerful than the calendar new year. The new school year summons thoughts of the changing season and with it, rain, wind, new scents, and fall colors. There is the melancholy of another summer finished. And, there is the thrill of starting over. So, what does all this have to do with balloons you might ask? Its a good question; but, I’m afraid I’ve given all the answer I can on the subject.

If you absolutely positively need to read more, please go to www.ballroomballoons.com/about.html.

Enjoy,

Stan

World’s Smallest Parade Float Unveiled

Without a doubt the coolest thing I learned this year at ballooniversity (www.ballooniversity.com) was how to make the world’s smallest parade float. Here’s how it works: You start with a remote control toy car. Then, you cover every part except the bottom with chicken wire (Use leather gloves so you don’t get cut!). The next step is to cover all of the chicken wire with miniature air-filled balloons. Finally, you create and attach a small balloon sculpture or just a foil shape balloon to fit the parade theme……and off you go.

I hope to apply this to my next parade decor job which will be this fall. I intend to have a fleet of six miniature parade floats with a team of six human remote control operators. The team will train to move in formation in the parade route and to “interact” with the crowd. To view some of our parade balloon decor please visit: www.ballroomballoons.com/gallery.html.

Before there was Ballroom Balloons, I got my start in the industry by doing singing telegrams. And, I still do them! Today, I was Tim the Grim Reaper for a gentleman’s 50th birthday party in Bowie, MD. It was at Tia’s Restaurant; and, Ken, the “victim” got the full treatment to the delight of his employees from Lasting Impressions, a fine landscaping company in Upper Marlboro. To learn more about singing telegrams and our humble beginnings, please visit www.ballroomballoons.com/singingtelegrams.html and www.ballroomballoons.com/about.html.

Until next time….

Enjoy,

Stan
