Postcard From Ballooniversity

In Blog, News by Stan Rosen

Dear Friends and (Balloon) Lovers,

I have just completed the two day Decorator’s Workshop at Ballooniversity in Athens, Ga. It has been an awesome experience so far! With this year’s theme: “A World of Possibilities”, I have participated in building mammoth scale balloon sculptures of the Brooklyn Bridge, Pyramids, a Chinese Temple, The Taj Mahal, an African Village, and a 75-foot long Dragon. Each of these projects had the help from dozens of balloon artists from around the world; and, we used thousands of balloons. These sculptures are kept secret from the regular Ballooniversity participants who arrive Friday, as they will be the decorations for our Saturday night party. Check back soon to www.ballroomballoons.com/gallery.html  for new photos from Ballooniversity.

Additionally, for the past two days I have been lucky enough to contribute to a three person team entered in the large sculpture competition. Somehow, I managed to squeeze in over a dozen hours these past two days helping to build a seven-foot tall computer, mouse, and keyboard out of thousands of balloons. I will soon have more to say about this experience on www.ballroomballoons.com/blog/.

I also completed my own entry in the delivery bouquet contest. My theme was A World of Paradise, in keeping with the World of Possibilities theme. Cash awards, trophies, and prizes will be awarded at our final Saturday night party. An easy way to view samples of our work can be found at www.ballroomballoons.com/slideshow.html.

Friday and Saturday I will be attending classes and hands-on balloon decorating seminars all day. I look forward to posting a report about those when I return to Maryland. Of course, there will be new pictures coming within a few weeks.

Just a word about the city of Athens and the people at Ballooniversity. They have all been fantastic! I have met people from throughout the South, the rest of the U. S. as well people from China to the U.K. We have been treated as honored guests every where in Athens. Even the 100 degree heat can’t cool off the high of this experience! Best bets if you visit Athens 1) The University of Georgia campus 2) The Mayflower Restaurant on Broad Street for the best breakfast ever-especially the biscuits. 3) Little Italy Restaurant for the best NYC style pizza I’ve ever had.

Enjoy,

Stan
