Last weekend, the balloon crew of www.BallroomBalloons.com travelled to Newport News, Virginia to decorate and celebrate the Christening of our nation’s newest submarine, The New Mexico, on December 13, 2008. Ballroom Balloons was commissioned by the primary contractor, Northrop Grumman, to create, install, and operate a fifty-foot long balloon drop containing over 1,300 balloons. The Northrop Grumman engineering team used a sophisticated crane system to hoist the drop net full of balloons over 120-feet high. So, it was a wonderful sight to watch the balloons cascade to the floor! The building where the submarine was housed was further decorated with several balloon columns that were as tall as fourteen feet.

There, you will also find a video of the full Christening ceremony. The balloon drop starts at about one hour and thirty minutes into the ceremony.
The Northrop Grumman team welcomed us with open arms and big hearts. Although the ceremony was chock full of admirals, the submariners, and other VIP’s, the decorating crew of Ballroom Balloons was made to feel as if we were the most important part of the ceremony. Their appreciation and friendship made us feel like we were instant members of the Northrop Grumman family.
